Monasteries of Meteora
Perched on rock formations that stand tall over the Thessaly plains, are the spectacular monasteries of Meteora.
Dating back to the 14th century, 24 monasteries were settled by monks who achieved a great feat by building the incredible structures on a very difficult landscape. A range of pulleys, ropes and ladders were used throughout the build that, once finished, allowed monks to not only worship in peace but to also escape battles and wars that took place below.
Today, there are just six of the 24 monasteries left, all of which are still functioning and open to the public. From the outside, the monasteries will take your breath away as you take it all in - from comprehending how the structures were built to the stunning sweeping views of the plains that lie before you. Stepping into the monasteries, you are met with intricate interior details from incredible paintings to chandeliers.
A visit to the monasteries of Meteora not only allows you to witness the incredible attraction but to connect to the rich religious history of this part of Greece and with yourself as you take the time to reflect and appreciate your surroundings.
