The most popular of Morocco’s imperial cities, Marrakech is a fascinating city with many sights to uncover. The ochre stucco buildings, paired with dry, rocky plains and a backdrop of the snow-capped Atlas Mountains, makes for a stunning city filled with an endless amount of photo-worthy opportunities.
Let’s start at the beginning, when the city was founded way back in 1062. From here, Marrakech has been witness to many moments in Morocco’s history and those stories can still be seen when visiting today. From the 12th century Koutoubia Mosque that was built during the Almohad dynasty, to the 16th century monument site of the Saadian Tombs, built during the Saadian era, to the colourful 19th century Bahia Palace, the history of Marrakech is still very much alive in the city.
A melting pot of Morocco’s strong culture can be found at the city’s main square, Jemaa el-Fnaa. Here, vendors set up stalls offering a wondrous mix of food, music and entertainment for locals and visitors. The colourful and vibrant square has been a central point of Marrakech since the 11th century and is the perfect place to soak in the atmosphere and get a taste of the Moroccan culture. The tune of snake charmer’s flutes and the smell of delicious local food fills the air in the square which is open during the day but truly comes to life in the evening.
Speaking of food, Marrakech is home to an abundance of incredibly tasty cuisine. The restaurant scene is vibrant in the city with a range of restaurants, lively bars, and charming cafes ready to serve you authentic, and sometimes exotic, meals! Is shopping more your thing? You’re in luck, souks are aplenty in the city selling a variety of items from clothing and accessories to shoes and homewares.
