Nairobi

Nairobi, capital of Kenya and the largest city in East Africa is still a relatively young city, founded just over 100 years ago. Home to the African headquarters of a number of major UN agencies, it offers a bustling and cosmopolitan lifestyle not often found in African cities. It is also the perfect gateway to the safari adventures awaiting in Kenya.

We meet our small group this evening for a welcome dinner at Carnivore Restaurant, an open-air restaurant specializing in an all-you-can-eat meat buffet.

Day 2

Kenya

Kenya is known for its wildlife conservation efforts. After breakfast we visit some initiatives that sit on the outskirts of Nairobi. First is a tour of David Sheldrick’s Wildlife Trust. Here orphaned baby elephants, and other orphaned animals, are cared for by a team of conservationists. We watch enthralled as the babies are brought from the national park for their daily mudbath.

We continue to the Giraffe Centre. This sanctuary is dedicated to the tallest of the animal species, but in particular to the endangered Rothschild Giraffe. Our small group then enjoys lunch at the Karen Blixen Coffee Garden. Here in these idyllic surrounds we enjoy our meal and a drink before a tour of the Karen Blixen Museum. We learn more about the author of Out of Africa.

Day 3

Kenya

Mount Kenya, Kenya’s highest mountain with an icy summit reaching a height of over 17,000 feet, dominates the landscape of Mount Kenya National Park. Once considered God’s domain by the colonial farmers located in its foothills, today it is the source of much of Kenya’s hydroelectricity supply.

We make our way to Mount Kenya this morning, checking into the luxurious Sweetwaters Serena Tented Camp. Located within the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, you’ll have the opportunity to spot the ‘Big Five’ right from your doorstep. We’ll enjoy a game drive this afternoon before visiting a chimpanzee sanctuary. This sanctuary is home to chimps that have been misplaced from their natural habitat and offers a unique opportunity to learn how the chimps are cared for.

Note

Roads in Africa, particularly in the reserves and national parks, are comprised of dirt or gravel and as a result can be bumpy.

Mount Kenya to Lake Nakuru

Created in 1961 around its lake, Lake Nakuru National Park is haven to hundreds of thousands of flamingo, as well as giraffe, white and black rhino, Rothschild giraffe, python and more. It offers spectacular scenery with the lake lying on the floor of the Great Rift Valley.

On arrival in Lake Nakuru, we check into our lodge before heading to Kenya’s first and largest rhino sanctuary. We enjoy a game drive here, providing us with our best opportunity to spot both white and black rhino.

Day 5

Lake Nakuru to Maasai Mara

The Maasai Mara, in Kenya’s south-west, is a large park reserve named for the Maasai people, the traditional inhabitants of the Mara River and the surrounding area. Each year the Great Migration of zebra, wildebeest and Thomson’s gazelle journey here from the Serengeti from July to October.

This morning our small group drives across the Kenyan countryside to the Maasai Mara.

Special Experience

Swahili cuisine is very diverse, with clear influences from Arabic, Indian and European culture. After visiting the wonderful herb garden at our lodge and learning more about the produce grown here, we’ll undertake a Swahili cooking class. We’ll then get to taste all the divine dishes for lunch before heading out on an afternoon game drive.

Day 6

Maasai Mara

Explore the Maasai Mara on an early morning game drive to the Mara River. Teeming with wildlife, the Maasai Mara is home to Kenya’s largest prides of lion and elephant herds. In the river we may also spot pods of hippo and Nile crocodiles lurking.

Lunch awaits us at our safari camp with some time to relax before an afternoon game drive. Over the next couple of hours our driver and guide expertly locate the best spots to see the myriad of local wildlife. Elephant, giraffe, eland, wildebeest, zebra and gazelle are plentiful and commonly sighted. This game drive is set apart with a visit to a local school in the Mara.

Special Experience

The Maasai Mara has one final treat in store for us this evening with a unique wilderness dining experience. Dinner is served to us within the Maasai Mara Game Reserve, a fitting farewell meal under the Kenyan night sky. A Maasai Maran mock attack and cultural dance is a precursor to our barbecue meal, accompanied by safari lanterns, a log fire, the stars above and the sounds of the African wild.

Note

The Maasai school will not be visited during school holidays and is subject to open times.
